Job Description

  • The solar R&D team is seeking a Solar Development Engineering Manager, who will work on designing and building the next generation of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technologies, to harvest energy from every rooftop and deliver it to our customers in a way that brings delight.

  • This exciting role will report to the Sr. Director of Solar R&D, and work within a cross-functional team to develop technology platforms and solar products that integrate seamlessly into roofs and deliver exceptional energy production at a competitive cost.

  • The ideal candidate must have a passion for thinking out of the box, delivering innovative ideas, and thriving in a start-up-like fast-paced environment.

  • This person will be part of leading the team that is responsible for concept, testing, developing, and delivering in high-volume, photovoltaic solar technology solutions that transform today's roofs. The role will focus on creative problem-solving and collaborative work necessary to build prototypes and take them from laboratory scale to pilot line.

What will you be doing?

  • Development: Lead a team through hands-on laboratory work, where you will help to envision, design, and prototype BIPV products for rooftops across the country.

  • Testing: You will ensure all products meet performance and reliability standards through rigorous laboratory and field testing.

  • Innovate: Work with suppliers and collaborators to develop new materials and designs that are needed for our solar solutions. Utilize software design capabilities (optical, electrical, thermal, etc.) to increase design cycle learning speed.

  • Problem Solve: Quickly process large amounts of information, assess critical issues, and resolve problems in a timely manner using critical thinking.

  • Leadership: Act as a professional resource and mentor with detailed knowledge and know-how in product development and manufacturing of solar panels and roof systems.

  • Cross-functional collaboration: You will work collaboratively with all members of the GAF Energy team, including R&D, product management, operations, and sales to plan, develop, and deliver new solar products.

  • Communication: You will regularly present concepts and results to GAF Energy executives and stakeholders.

What do we require from you?

  • BS Degree in Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent

  • 8 years of work experience in R&D and laboratory environment

  • Minimum 3 years work experience in solar module laboratory or manufacturing

  • Minimum 3 years managing a team of PhD level engineers

  • Hands-on problem solver

  • Strong communications skills

  • Energetic and forward-thinking

  • Ability to balance and prioritize competing interests

  • Proven record of innovation, problem-solving and delivering technical solutions in a timely manner

  • Understanding of key failure modes of PV module materials and best practices for testing as it relates to UL/IEC certification requirements and warranty period.

  • Excellent analytical skills with a solid statistical foundation

  • Experience with defining engineering specifications for processes, testing, and quality controls for high-volume production based on customer requirements

  • Willing and able to spend significant time in laboratory and pilot scale environment

  • Willing and able to travel within USA and Global up to 15% of his work time
